Early Big Brake Kit

Mar 31st 2022

The kit for the 80-thru-85 vans was sold with used uprights until we ran out of used ones. We then sold the kit without the uprights and made the customer search for a set.

The reason why you had to switch the uprights was the bolt spacing for the caliper on the early upright was too close together and wouldn't fit the more modern caliper.

On 2wd vans, the hub is part of the brake rotor, and the bearings press into it. This kit used a hub like a Syncro, which uses studs and nuts to secure the front wheel instead of bolts like a normal 2wd, and instead of using the single wheel bearing like a Syncro, it uses the inner and outer bearing/seal of the later model 2wd vans so the bearings/seals are easy to find:

If you need a new hub, check out the South African Wheel Hub. They say they are for South African brakes, however the Audi-based kit uses the same thing.

The calipers for the Audi-based kit are from a 1998/1999 Audi A4. The secret to that kit is the caliper carrier, which was a proprietary carrier to the company that developed that kit. The carrier makes the spacing between the upright and the rotor correct, but unfortunately, the company that developed the carrier is long gone.
