Original Vanagon cooling components were nominal from the factory. Largely made of plastic, they often cracked within a few years of service--constant heat cycling took its toll. As the years went by and VW corporate support of the Vanagon waned, it became harder to find original factory parts and we Vanagon drivers were forced to use whatever inferior aftermarket parts we could find. This especially was true of the coolant expansion tank. Thin and with brittle seams, aftermarket replacements were a continual disappointment. If you've ever been stranded on the side of the road with a cracked expansion tank, you'll understand our frustration.
Rocky Mountain Westy's solution was to create our own tank from scratch. Our Aluminum Coolant Expansion Tank is a heavy duty invention that is what the original component should have been.
