Subaru/Vanagon 4 Cyl. DIY Conversion Kit for 2.2L Motors
The Van Cafe Subaru-Vanagon conversion kit is a proven solution for converting your Vanagon to powerful and reliable Subaru power. We were one of the first to bring do-it-yourself kits to the market and with over 700 conversions on the road, we've honed our parts and processes to offer a streamlined conversion experience. Van Cafe manufactures the majority of our conversion parts at our state-of-the-art facility here in Fort Collins, CO where parts are jig-welded for a perfect fit every time.
We’ve configured our conversion kit to be modular and adaptable: You can order the base kit to get you started, or go full-monty and get everything you’ll need to pilot your Van to your next adventure.
We make it easy to order each system by offering you a comprehensive, systems-based approach. Need an engine cooling solution? Check out our complete cooling system. Don’t want to cobble together an exhaust? We offer a complete exhaust finishing kit.
You can find all recommended conversion-related parts by clicking the “Finish your project” tab above.
In addition to the best parts on the market, Van Cafe is proud of our long tradition of complete customer support. At any point in the conversion process, from contemplating your initial purchase, to the post-conversion set-up, feel free to contact us with specific questions. Our reviews speak for themselves!
A power-plant conversion presents the perfect opportunity to upgrade other essential components. For instance, when you have the Subaru motor out, why not take a little extra time to renew the timing belt and water pump? With the engine out of your Vanagon, why not tackle those CV joint boots or drop the fuel tank to add Van Cafe stainless steel coolant pipes? How about a fuel tank reseal kit?
If you are looking to purchase this for an Air-Cooled Vanagon you will also need the Transmission Relocation Plate
The base Van Cafe 2.2L Conversion Kit includes the following components:
- Manual or Automatic Engine-to-Transmission Adapter
- Conversion Flywheel/Flexplate Kit
- Engine Carrier Bar System
- Aluminum Heat Shield Kit
- Stainless Steel Exhaust Headers
- Conversion Throttle/Accelerator Cable
Please note: This kit is just the components to convert your van, no engine is included. Conversion kits are not subject to discounts.
Instructions
Installation Notes:
+ This kit directly supports the 2.2L EJ22 motor that was produced from 1990-2001.
+ Although the Subaru EJ22 2.2L will push your Van along ok, we highly recommend using the EJ25 2.5L motor instead. The cost of the conversion is the same and you get almost 25% more power. In addition some 2.2L parts are becoming obsolete so future repairs may be impacted.
+ If you're converting an air-cooled Vanagon, you'll need our transmission relocation plate to move the transmission toward the rear of the Van as the air-cooled trans is shorter than the WBX trans. You'll also need to lengthen your rear shift rod by 1.5". Alternatively, you can upgrade to a WBX transmission and shift linkage.
+ We will be happy to walk you through selecting the proper kit for your donor. The EJ22 had several iterations over the decade that it was produced and we want to make sure you get what you need.
+ You will need to determine how the spark plugs are accessed on your donor. They will either screw directly into the cylinder head like this:
or they will be accessed through the valve covers like this:
+ Aircooled Vanagons will require the customer to source the necessary cooling system components. Please let us know if you are converting an aircooled Vanagon.
+ Vanagons using a diesel transmission will need to source the correct 091-002 bell-housing as our kit will not work with the diesel specific bell-housing.
Note: Most conversion kits can be boxed and shipped within 48-hours of order confirmation, dependent on time/day of order.
