This version of the shift rod bushing was a design change that VW did over the course of production.  It is not designed to use rubber boots but has a double lip seal that keeps dirt out and grease in.

You can find it in two places in the van:

• The front bushing is near the gas tank in all water cooled gas models
• The rear busing is in one of the rear frame members in watercooled gas models. 

Fits Mid-1983-1991

NOTE: Even if your model came with the style of bushing that used rubber boots, this bootless style can be substituted.  In other words, it is fine to use this version in every water cooled gas model.
