This starter, when used in conjunction with our starter adapter plate will give your Subaru conversion that extra starting power over the stock Vanagon unit. This unit will also work for 2wd manual and automatic Vans, just be sure to purchase the correct starter adapter for your Van. This Bosch re-manufactured unit is a high torque gear-reduction type starter, is slightly longer than the stock waterboxer starter, and has a self-supporting shaft-- it no longer requires the pilot bushing to position the shaft end.

For your convenience, we've also put together a complete high torque starter kit!

If you have a Syncro 4wd Vanagon, we would recommend purchasing the other Bosch starter unit, 003747, because the length is shorter than the 2WD unit, allowing an easier install that does not require you to remove the diff lock pod. You will also need the correct starter adapter for that unit.
