One-piece speedo cable for all 2WD/RWD Vanagon 83 thru 91 that use the clip in style to the speedo head and not early model thread in style. It is used to bypass a defective OXS box or broken cables with just one part. When speedo starts to make noise, it can be challenging to determine which components are causing the issue. This cable allows you to eliminate the two cables and the counter box as possible culprits in one action.

To install, disconnect the cable from the speedometer, tape the white pushbuttons together (that secure cable to speedo) and tie a nylon string to the same end. Remove grille and driver side headlight assembly, which will gain access to the grommet where the cable runs through. Pull the upper portion of the cable through the hole into the headlight area. Detach string from cable but tie it off to the body for later use. Now tape the bottom of the new cable to the top of the old cable. Disconnect the cable from underneath at the wheel (best to remove the wheel bearing cap), and there also may be a bolt with a clip on the body. Now pull the old cable down through the floor with the new cable in tow. Route the new cable through the front end in the same manner and attach it. Now go back above and use string to pull the upper part of cable back up through dash.

VERY IMPORTANT: be sure to leave a little slack in cable in the dash area to allow the cable to have a sweeping arc as it enters the speedo head. The straighter it attaches and the smoother the arc, the less the likelihood of needle bounce.

Please Look: Look at the second picture and note the grommet is on the wrong side of the sheath. We occasionally receive cables that are not assembled correctly. Don't fret because this is an easy fix. First, pull the grommet off the cable from the circlip side (the part that goes to the hub). Then pull the white connector that goes to the speedo. Finally, install the grommet and put the connector back.
