This shift lever lives on the transmission and is the link between the rear shift rod and the input to the trans.  The nylon ball wears down over time and the resulting play creates sloppy shifting. 

Fits aircooled and diesel 1980 thru 83.4:  all models with the three-piece shift rod linkage.
