The front heater core in your Vanagon is housed in a plastic box under the dashboard.  This box must be separated to access the heater core when the dreaded time of replacement comes. 

At the factory, some boxes were put together with spring clips and some were glued.  If yours has clips, you can most likely reuse your clips.  If your box is glued, you'll need these heater core box spring clips to mate your box back together after replacing your heater core.

VW used 15 for the front heater core box and 2 for the rear heater core box- 17 total per van
