Matched Door Handles with four Keys, Ignition, and Lock Cores
Matched Door Handles with four Keys, Ignition, and Lock Cores
One key to rule them all!
This kit includes both front door handles, door handle seals, big and small, the mechanical portion of the ignition lock, sliding door lock cylinder, and rear hatch lock cylinder. Fits all years, and all models of VW T3 Vanagon.
Note: This kit uses the VW Golf MKIII style keys with the AH key code, not the original Vanagon N code keys. The cylinders included with this kit can replace the sliding door and rear hatch lock cylinders so that one key can be used for all the doors and the ignition.
Be sure to keep the key inserted when the lock cylinders are not installed. If the key is removed (once the black tube is removed from the lock cylinder), the tumblers and springs will go flying, and you will have made the whole project significantly more complex and difficult.
Replacing the rear hatch lock requires removing the three bolts holding the rear latch, removing the lock assembly, driving out the pin, removing the lock cylinder (requires that the original key is inserted), installing the new lock cylinder, driving in the pin, and reassembling. Please note that this cylinder is the style used for rear hatches with power locks, but it can still be used with the later version of the non-power locks. If your van uses the 80 the early 84 lock, this kit will not work, although we are working on a fix for that. The position of the cylinder is 90 degrees from the original cylinder, but it will still function. Be sure to take a picture while disassembling so you can put it back together correctly.
Replacing the ignition lock requires the removal of the ignition lock and reassembly with the new one. Consult the Bentley manual or go to YouTube and search for a video.
Replacing the sliding door lock cylinder requires removing the outside handle, removing a small set screw that holds the lock cylinder, sliding out the old lock cylinder (requires that the original key is inserted), sliding in the new lock cylinder, replacing the small set screw, and reinstalling the handle. A small spring inside the handle and a sliding pin must be in the proper positions to function correctly, so take note when disassembling. If you have replaced your original sliding door handle with an aftermarket version, there is an additional modification needed to use the lock cylinder in this kit. You will need to file the lower portion of the lock cylinder to match the lock cylinder profile in the aftermarket handle.
