This is the emergency/handbrake ratchet rod that is responsible for releasing the emergency/parking brake in your Vanagon.  When you push the button on the end of your e-brake handle, this rod releases the mechanism and frees the brake.

Note:  Fits mid-85 on, from chassis number F-055253-on.
