One More for the Road: Rolling the Dice on the Season's Last Ride

There’s a certain kind of person who keeps the van packed long after most have called it for the season. The forecast looks dicey — maybe a stretch of sun, maybe a wall of gray.

This time of year, every trip feels like a bit of a gamble. You might roll into camp to find golden light spilling through the pines, or you might wake to a tent rattling in sleet. But that’s part of the fun, isn’t it? The unpredictability keeps things interesting — it’s what makes those perfect moments feel like a win.

It's easy to view an "adventure" as the perfect outing. But often it is the unexpected, the mishaps, and how we roll with it and make the best of things. That's where the memories are truly captured. That's when you look over at the people you're with and form bonds that last a lifetime.

You shrug off the chill, pour another cup of coffee, and laugh when the wind picks up. Whatever the weather brings, you’re in it together. The sound of rain on the roof, the hum of the heater, the quick dash outside to check that one stubborn latch — it all becomes part of the story shared over laughs at the next van meetup.

Maybe that’s why we love these shoulder-season adventures. They remind us that we don’t control much, but we do get to choose our attitude. Que será, será.

As long as the van’s running, the coffee’s hot, and the company’s good, that’s enough to keep rolling — even if it’s just for one more weekend before the long sleep of winter.
