This aluminum thermostat housing upgrade kit gives 1986-1991 2WD Vanagons with 2.1L engines the opportunity to upgrade from their original plastic housing.  Plastic housing are prone to melting or distorting with heat causing leaks and headaches.

Our kit includes all the parts for the upgrade with your choice of thermostat: 87C (original temp) or 80C (lower temp).

Includes:

  • Aluminum thermostat housing
  • Fuel injection temperature sensor
  • Gauge temperature sensor
  • Your choice of thermostat
  • Thermostat seal
  • Thermostat housing seal
  • Two bolts and washers
  • Electrical connector

Fitment Notes:

  • The aluminum housing differs from the original plastic unit in that the updated coolant temperature sensors thread into the thermostat housing body rather than simply pushing in.

  • Our upgrade kit intentionally doesn't include a thermostat housing top as the tops never melt like the main housing do and you can reuse your housing top.  If you would like to order a new top, you can do so directly on this product page.

  • The electrical connector for the fuel injection temp sensor will be the same as original but the connector for the gauge sensor needs modification discussed below.

Electrical modification: The gauge temperature sensor is a two-wire plug on the original plastic housings, but with the aluminum housing the sensor grounds through the mounting threads and only one wire is needed. As such, simply cut the yellow wire with the red stripe close to the connector and crimp on the included female spade connector.  Push this wire onto the gauge sensor that comes with the kit. The ground wire (usually brown) is no longer necessary, so cut it back where it comes out of the harness and remove/cancel it.
