This accelerator pedal pivot transfers the downward force of the accelerator pedal to a latitudinal force to pull the accelerator cable. 

This pivot can wear in a few places over time.  If your pedal seems to have excessive play, you will benefit from replacing this pivot.  Excessive wear can also make your accelerator push rod fall out of its attachment in this pivot.
